Pomorski fakultet u Rijeci, the Faculty of Maritime Studies – University of Rijeka (herein after referred as PFRI) is the oldest Maritime Education and Training institution of higher education in the Adriatic area. PFRI firstly was established as the Nautical College in 1949 and was transformed into the Faculty of Maritime and Transport Studies, becoming a member of the University of Rijeka in 1979. Today, PFRI is a maritime school of higher professional education offering HND/HNC diploma courses as well as academic degree courses in Nautical Science & Maritime Safety, Marine Engineering, Marine Electronics & Communications, and Technology of Maritime Transport. The Faculty has a total of 77 employees and the academic staff comprises 44 persons (23 of them holding Ph.D. degrees). Graduates of the PFRI occupy responsible posts in a number of Croatian shipping companies, ports, shipyards, oil refineries and other industrial plants, Coast Guard & Harbormaster’s Offices, shipping and forwarding agents, etc. The academic staff of PFRI offers scientific expertise and experience in: economics of transport, shipping and port economics, transport logistics, transport technology, maritime safety, navigation, electronics, marine engineering, marine power plants, port operations, maritime law, law of the sea, verbal maritime communications, etc..

PFRI will carry out the information gathering related to the regional scientific and research community dealing with maritime research, focusing in specific on shipbuilding. The Faculty will also take care of the technology offer gathering for the work to be done in the Liaison Office established by Porin, and will be strongly involved in the development of the joint Action Plan, representing the research interests of the scientific community. Due to its broad experiences in the field of concern, PFRI will be the leader in setting up the Internat. shipbuilding dissemination forum, guaranteeing a wide involvement of regional key actors which is also assured through the active participation of the project personnel in scientific and industrial committees. What’s more, as a part of the University of Rijeka, PFRI can use all the potential provided by the University through its 10 Faculties, 4 Schools of Higher Education and 3 Infrastructure Institutions.
